Tips to avoid constipation

A few tips to be shared with all mommies, These are what I compiled from mothers in Ummikusayang.. I just place it here in case our Amiir experiences it. Kalau tak paste sinih..nanti catit mana mana tah pastu hilang....:)

Medicines
Duphalac (mild laxative), Sorbitol and Antibio
Food to AVOID (or reduce):

Bananas (yes, surprisingly), rice, soy, applesauce and food made from wheat flour - these make the stool firmer

Food to TAKE (or try):
Prune juice (but must dilute with water in ratio eg 1:1 or 1:2)
Apple juice
Fruits and vegetables
Add bran (or is it oat bran) to the cereal
Mix some flax seed oil to the baby's food (flax seed oil is better than mineral oil)
Drink more water

Other things to do:
Encourage the baby to be active and move around
Exercise the baby's legs by doing the pedalling exercise (ie moving the baby's legs like you're cycling)
Massage or press the baby's stomach just below her navel

Or Massage your baby's tummy.Start at the belly button and then massage outwards in circles in a clockwise direction. Some oil or cream on your fingers can also help.

Move your baby's legs in a cycling motion.Place your baby so he or she is lying on their back. Hold their legs and turn them gently in a quick cycling motion. This will make the stomach muscles move and, in turn, put gentle pressure on the intestines to make them move.

Give your baby a warm bath to make her relax. Then,in the bath, you massage her stomach. When you wash your baby's bottom, apply some cream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the outside of the anus.

Give cooled, boiled water. You can give your baby extra fluids with bottles of cooled, boiled water.

Once your baby start to eat more porridge and fruit or vegetable purées into their diet. These are rich in fibre and will help prevent constipation. Prune purée is particularly good for this purpose.

Things that causes constipation:
I'm not sure about this, but other than the normal reasons like not drinking enough etc i think taking cow's milk or dairy products eg cheese may cause constipation to certain babies. So during the treatment period do limit or avoid these and see if there's any improvement. After it's over, you can still offer them these things but in moderate amount (ie see how much they can handle without repeating the problem)
